Bioengineering Group
The Group unique feature is broad interaction with commercial partners, biotech and pharma companies on the basis of applied sciences and projects. According to Łukasiewicz Research Network policy and mission we support or partners in the development of new ideas and products in the field of biotechnology. We employ scientist with broad scope of interest and experience, with major focus on molecular biology, biotechnology, immunology, biochemistry.
Tomasz Lipiński, Ph.D., principal investigator
Tomasz Lipiński studied biotechnology at the University of Wrocław. After graduation he was employed in the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree. He was a fellow at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, Potters Bar, UK (under NATO-funded fellowship), and at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, where he subsequently worked as Research Associate (2006-2010).
After returning to Poland, Lipiński, Ph.D., joined Wroclaw Research Centre EIT+ to work on a multidisciplinary project NAOMIS – BioSens.
He has experience in immunochemistry, biochemistry, immunology and microbiology. During his stay at University of Alberta he worked on a novel glycoconjugate vaccine against C. albicans capable of targeting to dendritic cells and possessing self-adjuvanting properties.
His team conducts research on multidisciplinary projects at the intersection of life sciences and nanotechnology. Biological research involve studies on biological activity of the substances of natural origin, signal transduction pathways, designing of functional conjugates; nanotechnology part include bio-functionalization of nanoparticles and surfaces for application as drug or vaccine carriers, development of a novel nanoluminophores for bioimaging and others.
The Group was initiated as a part of large EU funded program “The application of nanotechnology in Adavanced Materials” performed by Research Center EIT+ and was realizing the interdisciplinary project focused on the implementation of luminescent upconverting nanoparticles into biological applications especially biodetection and bioimaging. Later, we were conducting research in several other projects with partners from bio-tek companies including: DegScreen, ANEURYSENS, FLUSENSOR inProbe and others. Among applied research, members of our group are running basic research projects i.e. Pellino focused on some mechanisms of the immune response. Currently running projects includes classical biotechnology and concerns production of succinic acid by genetically engineered bacteria “GreenAmber” and developments of systems for fast, high-throughput diagnostics of SARS-CoV-2 infection “Fibiomed”.
