Innovative Approach to Learning and Environmental Protection
Łukasiewicz – PORT and BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions Introduce Youth to the World of Chemistry and Technology
Free Classes for Children from Wrocław and Surrounding Areas
Wrocław, October 25, 2024 – The first cycle of the BASF ECMS Academy has launched at Łukasiewicz – PORT. Through this unique initiative, 300 young participants will step into the roles of engineers, tackling real-world environmental challenges. The classes, designed by educators from Ogrody Doświadczeń (Gardens of Experience) and experts from BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions, will allow participants to create samples of automotive catalysts—technology essential for improving air quality.
“Integrating science and business is a strategic pillar of our work, and building partnerships, especially with local enterprises, is key to achieving our long-term goals. Initiatives like the BASF ECMS Academy effectively transfer innovative solutions from laboratories to market practice, while strengthening ties with the local community. For a scientific institute, education is a top-priority investment—we believe that fostering interest in science from an early age is crucial to shaping future innovation leaders,” says Professor Jarosław Bosy, Director of Łukasiewicz – PORT, the Polish Center for Technology Development.
“Our collaboration with Łukasiewicz – PORT – the Polish Center for Technology Development enables us to bring chemistry and our environmental efforts closer to youth in an inspiring way. We are proud to pass on knowledge that will help build a more sustainable future,” says Anna Tarasewicz, Board Member of BASF Catalysts Poland.
This project is part of a broader science popularization program at Łukasiewicz – PORT. “In the past two years, we have conducted over 1,000 classes for 14,000 students. We believe that these workshops will help them discover the fascinating world of research, and many may choose a future career in science,” says Marek Staniewicz, Director of the Social Responsibility Department at Łukasiewicz – PORT.
Academy participants will have the chance to work with technology used at BASF’s catalyst factory in Środa Śląska, one of the most advanced facilities in Europe. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to learn how innovative solutions can have a tangible impact on environmental protection. “We are committed to education because we believe there is no better investment than in children’s and youth’s learning. It’s a future that allows us to level opportunities, share our knowledge, and strengthen the collaboration between business and science,” emphasizes Jan Eberhardt, President of BASF Catalysts Poland.
The workshops, aimed at students in the final grades of primary school and high school from Wrocław and nearby areas, will be completely free of charge, with costs covered by BASF. “We have been present in the region for 10 years and continually expand our presence. Balancing this economic success with environmental and social aspects is essential to us. The opening of the BASF ECMS Academy is another step in our mission to support children’s and youth’s education,” says Markus Steigner, Board Member of BASF Catalysts Poland.
