The project was carried out in collaboration with our institute. It\u2019s a major achievement and \u2013 as Dr. Duda himself puts it \u2013 the beginning of a new chapter.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64dc7fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"64dc7fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>At the intersection of chemistry, materials engineering, and photonics <br><\/strong> <\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fff054f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fff054f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Already in his master\u2019s thesis, Dr. Duda studied liquid crystal mixtures, focusing on the analysis of their optical properties. These materials have applications in photonics, optical sensors, and modern display technologies. \u2013 I conducted the research for my master\u2019s thesis at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT and defended it at Wroc\u0142aw University of Science and Technology. I then carried out my Industrial PhD project at our institute and the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Wroc\u0142aw \u2013 he explains. His PhD was supervised by Dr. hab. Ma\u0142gorzata Guzik, with Dr. Maciej Czajkowski acting as co-supervisor. At \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, Dr. Duda worked as part of Dr. hab. Joanna Cybi\u0144ska\u2019s team and in the Clean Room Laboratory, where he is currently employed.        <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c131ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1c131ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>His scientific experience \u2013 including an international research internship in Lyon with Prof. Jo\u00ebl Bellessa \u2013 highlights the importance of flexibility and openness to interdisciplinary science. Jo\u00ebla Bellessy, pokazuj\u0105, jak wa\u017cne w pracy badacza s\u0105 elastyczno\u015b\u0107 i otwarto\u015b\u0107 na nauk\u0119 interdyscyplinarn\u0105.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3438964 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3438964\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Luminescent dyes and functional microstructures<\/strong> <\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4cd91c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4cd91c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>During his PhD, Dr. Duda focused on organic luminescent dyes \u2013 materials that emit light when excited, e.g. by UV radiation. He analyzed their properties in various matrices, such as sol-gel materials, polymers, and liquid crystals, aiming to apply them in photonics, especially as microstructures for light amplification. \u2013 Now we\u2019re taking it a step further \u2013 we\u2019re working on integrating multiple components on a single substrate and functionalizing the surfaces of microstructures for the detection of selected bioanalytes \u2013 says the researcher. One particularly promising result \u2013 although with a different potential use \u2013 involves polyelectrolyte layers containing selected dyes that change color depending on ambient humidity. The team has already submitted a patent application for this solution.       <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-935fab2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"935fab2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interdisciplinary collaboration and practical science<\/strong> <\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c863d7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c863d7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u2013 The PhD and my work at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT allowed me to participate in many interdisciplinary projects, which helped me understand how crucial collaboration between scientists of different specialties is \u2013 chemists, physicists, and more \u2013 says Dr. Duda, who also values the practical nature of the Industrial PhD. \u2013 In this kind of doctorate, you don\u2019t just think about the research \u2013 you always have in the back of your mind the question: What can this be used for? What is the application? \u2013 The main goal of Dr. Duda\u2019s work is the development of photonic components \u2013 miniature elements used for transmitting, processing, and amplifying light.       <\/p><p>Shortly after defending his PhD, \u0141ukasz Duda swapped his lab coat for hiking boots and set off to celebrate his achievement \u2013 by climbing the peaks of the Polish mountains.
