According to estimates from the World Health Organization and the National Cancer Registry, more than 25,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in Poland, and the lifetime risk of developing the disease is approximately 12.5%.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"415\" data-end=\"890\"><strong>This means that statistically 1 in 8 women will face breast cancer. Despite significant advances in diagnostics and therapy, breast cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality among women. Further improvements in prevention, early detection, and combined treatment strategies are essential. At \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, we combine biobanking, AI, and breakthrough research technologies to accelerate progress in the fight against breast cancer.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fe510f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4fe510f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4dac2b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c4dac2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Biobank \u2013 the Foundation of Modern Research<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-554bc15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"554bc15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"949\" data-end=\"1280\">One of the pillars of the research infrastructure at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT is the <a href=\"https:\/\/port.lukasiewicz.gov.pl\/en\/rd-centers\/population-diagnostics-center\/biobank-research-group\/\"><strong data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1054\">Biobank Research Group<\/strong><\/a>\u2014one of the oldest, most technologically advanced, and certified units of its kind in Poland. Led by <strong data-start=\"1155\" data-end=\"1193\">Dr. hab. n. med. Patrycja Gazi\u0144ska<\/strong>, it plays a key role in translational and implementation-oriented biomedical projects.<\/p><p data-start=\"1282\" data-end=\"1661\">The biobank systematically collects and secures high-quality biological material\u2014especially tissue samples\u2014linked to comprehensive clinical, demographic, and epidemiological data. Such integrated resources form the basis for biomarker validation studies, the development of new diagnostic tools, and the analysis of molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, particularly in oncology.<\/p><p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1908\">The group integrates modern research technologies from experimental pathology with biobanking, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and omics technologies. This synergy enables comprehensive translational research, including in breast cancer.<\/p><p data-start=\"1910\" data-end=\"2152\">Through close collaboration with leading scientific and clinical centers in Poland and abroad, the team participates in projects with high innovation potential and implementation value, supporting the development of modern precision medicine.<\/p><p data-start=\"2154\" data-end=\"2568\">As <strong data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2195\">Dr. hab. n. med. Patrycja Gazi\u0144ska<\/strong> emphasizes, meaningful participation in international application-oriented research projects requires not only properly secured biological material but also full clinical context:<br data-start=\"2375\" data-end=\"2378\" \/><em data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2568\">\u201cThis is a priceless gift from patients and clinicians\u2014valuable for science today and for future generations tomorrow\u2014enabling new discoveries and the development of innovative therapies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d201432 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d201432\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Artificial Intelligence \u2013 A New Dimension of Biomedical Research<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83a07d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"83a07d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2648\" data-end=\"2948\">Using biobank resources, research teams at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT apply advanced AI and machine learning methods to analyze digital histopathology images. These technologies reveal subtle morphological features often imperceptible in conventional microscopy, significantly enhancing diagnostic precision.<\/p><p data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"3440\">At the same time, advanced <strong data-start=\"2977\" data-end=\"2998\">spatial pathology<\/strong> methods are being developed, integrating morphology with molecular profiling. Technologies such as spatial transcriptomics and spatial proteomics allow mapping gene and protein expression directly within the tissue architecture. Integrating imaging with molecular data provides a multidimensional view of the tumor microenvironment, enabling the identification of unique cellular interactions and discovery of clinically relevant biomarkers.<\/p><p data-start=\"3442\" data-end=\"3772\">In the next step, tissue samples combined with clinical, demographic, and epidemiological data constitute the basis for <strong data-start=\"3562\" data-end=\"3590\">deep patient phenotyping<\/strong>\u2014detailed biological and clinical characterization. Such integration supports classification of patients in terms of prognosis, risk of progression, and predicted treatment response.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0017459 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0017459\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cancer Pain Treatment<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0341d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0341d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3809\" data-end=\"4096\">Researchers at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT also develop projects beyond classical diagnostics.<br data-start=\"3894\" data-end=\"3897\" \/>The team of <strong data-start=\"3909\" data-end=\"3935\">Dr. Mateusz Kucharczyk<\/strong> investigates <strong data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"3974\">tumor neurophysiology<\/strong>, combining neurobiology and oncology to better understand the neural regulation of tumor development and associated pain.<\/p><p data-start=\"4098\" data-end=\"4584\">Using state-of-the-art neurophysiological methods (including <em data-start=\"4159\" data-end=\"4168\">in vivo<\/em> optical imaging, electrophysiology, and optogenetics), researchers monitor and modulate the activity of genetically defined neuronal populations to study their influence on tumor biology.<br data-start=\"4356\" data-end=\"4359\" \/><em data-start=\"4359\" data-end=\"4555\">\u201cThe nervous system is increasingly recognized as a key regulator of tumor progression. For example, cutting certain nerve branches innervating specific tumors significantly slows tumor growth,\u201d<\/em> explains <strong data-start=\"4565\" data-end=\"4583\">Dr. Kucharczyk<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"4586\" data-end=\"5081\">An interdisciplinary team\u2014neurophysiologists, immunologists, and oncologists\u2014uses 3D tumor reconstruction, flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, and high-throughput spectroscopy to understand tumor dynamics and its microenvironment. These efforts may lead to the development of a new class of drugs\u2014simultaneously analgesic and anticancer. Current projects focus on tumors of the <strong data-start=\"4960\" data-end=\"4990\">breast, lung, and prostate<\/strong>, known for their tendency to metastasize to bone and cause severe, therapy-resistant pain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df9eeca elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"df9eeca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Therapeutic Vaccine<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cae8ef6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cae8ef6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"5116\" data-end=\"5438\">The team of <strong data-start=\"5128\" data-end=\"5151\">Dr. Tomasz Lipi\u0144ski<\/strong> is developing a therapeutic breast cancer vaccine designed to stimulate the immune system after diagnosis. The project, conducted in collaboration with <strong data-start=\"5304\" data-end=\"5315\">Vaxican<\/strong>, focuses on viral-like particles (VLPs) displaying the <strong data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5387\">HER2 antigen<\/strong>, characteristic of certain breast cancer subtypes.<\/p><p data-start=\"5440\" data-end=\"5698\">The goal is to trigger a natural immune response to help eliminate cancer cells. The vaccine may become a less expensive and less burdensome alternative to monoclonal antibody therapies, marking a significant step toward personalized breast cancer treatment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8ee3735 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8ee3735\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Scale of the Challenge<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1088deb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1088deb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"5740\" data-end=\"6148\">Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed malignant tumor among women globally and one of the leading causes of cancer mortality. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), <strong data-start=\"5947\" data-end=\"5972\">2.3 million new cases<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"5977\" data-end=\"6000\">over 660,000 deaths<\/strong> were recorded worldwide in 2022. Epidemiological trends suggest that by 2025 these numbers may exceed <strong data-start=\"6103\" data-end=\"6124\">2.5 million cases<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"6129\" data-end=\"6147\">700,000 deaths<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"6150\" data-end=\"6597\">Modern technologies, biobanking, and diverse research directions\u2014from molecular diagnostics and neurophysiology to bioengineering\u2014form an integrated approach to breast cancer research at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT. However, the key element remains <strong data-start=\"6390\" data-end=\"6407\">collaboration<\/strong>: with clinicians, hospitals, scientific centers, and patient organizations.
