Beginning in October, Prof. Andrzej Bia\u0142owiec joins the scientific community of \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, where he will lead and develop the Biomaterials Engineering and Environmental Technologies Research Group<\/a>. This strategic decision enables the institute to expand into new, priority research areas within the \u0141ukasiewicz Research Network.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u201cThe process of selecting a leader for this research group took several months. From the start, we knew we needed a scientist with extensive experience, strong network-oriented collaboration skills, and the ability to mentor young researchers. Prof. Bia\u0142owiec meets all these requirements and will help us grow in additional strategic domains of the \u0141ukasiewicz Network,\u201d<\/em> says Prof. Jaros\u0142aw Bosy<\/strong>, Director of the institute.<\/p>

Until now, \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT has carried out projects aligned with two strategic areas: defense and national security<\/strong> and industrial chemistry<\/strong>. The appointment of Prof. Bia\u0142owiec opens the door to two more\u2014circular economy<\/strong> and energy transition<\/strong>\u2014which today rank among the most important scientific and economic priorities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Researcher and a Practitioner<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For more than 25 years, Prof. Bia\u0142owiec<\/strong> has worked in bioeconomy and environmental engineering. He specializes in biomass and waste processing technologies\u2014from anaerobic digestion and torrefaction to gasification and innovative Waste-to-Hydrogen and Waste-to-Carbon concepts. As he often emphasizes: \u201cWaste is a source of scientific inspiration.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Technologies he has developed have already been implemented 16 times at industrial scale<\/strong>, and his expertise is sought after by multiple organizations. He serves on the Scientific Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroc\u0142aw<\/strong> and sits on the board of the Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley Association<\/strong>. His knowledge supports academic institutions as well as industry and local government partners.<\/p>

Prof. Bia\u0142owiec has completed the full research pathway\u2014from basic science through R&D projects to implementation and commercialization. He has led over 35 research projects<\/strong> and collaborated with leading institutions worldwide, including Penn State University<\/strong>, Technical University of Munich<\/strong>, and Fudan University<\/strong>.<\/p>

He is also a highly respected mentor\u2014he has supervised nine PhD graduates<\/strong>, with nine more currently under his guidance<\/strong>. He attracts young researchers from many countries, offering them individualized development paths.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hiring Prof. Bia\u0142owiec is part of the institute\u2019s broader strategy to expand its involvement across additional strategic areas of the \u0141ukasiewicz Research Network. Thanks to his scientific and practical expertise, \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT gains a leader capable of building international consortia, securing major projects, and successfully implementing new technologies.<\/p>
