Global demand for them continues to rise, as does the scope of their potential applications.<\/p><p data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"665\">One of the greatest breakthroughs of recent decades was the discovery that gallium nitride can be used to build efficient blue LEDs. The work of <strong data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"527\">Prof. Isamu Akasaki<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"552\">Prof. Hiroshi Amano<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"582\">Prof. Shuji Nakamura<\/strong> revolutionized lighting technology and earned the <strong data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"664\">2014 Nobel Prize in Physics<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"667\" data-end=\"1141\">Today, scientific attention is shifting toward the next generation of materials: <strong data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"791\">ultra-wide bandgap (UWB) semiconductors<\/strong>, which open new technological frontiers, especially in the ultraviolet spectrum. These materials will be the focus of the <strong data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"1001\">8th International Workshop on Ultra-Wide Bandgap Materials and Devices (IWUMD 2025)<\/strong>, held in Wroc\u0142aw on <strong data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1041\">September 21\u201324<\/strong>. This year\u2019s hosts are <strong data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1087\">\u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1140\">Wroc\u0142aw University of Science and Technology<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1143\" data-end=\"1677\">The conference was initiated by Prof. Hiroshi Amano, with its first edition held in China in 2016. Initially centered on UV-oriented materials\u2014primarily AlGaN\u2014its scope has gradually expanded to include a broader class of wide-bandgap semiconductors such as gallium oxide, boron nitride, diamond, and silicon carbide.<br data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1463\" \/><em data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1596\">\u201cThis is the eighth edition, and its thematic range keeps growing. Today we discuss the entire spectrum of wide-bandgap materials,\u201d<\/em> notes <strong data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1638\">Dr. hab. The program includes a keynote lecture by <strong data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"1931\">Nobel Laureate Prof. Hiroshi Amano<\/strong>, expert talks, thematic sessions, and interactive poster presentations.<\/p><p data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2326\"><em data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2060\">\u201cIt is a three-day workshop\u2014short, but very intense,\u201d<\/em> explains <strong data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2093\">Prof. Detlef Hommel<\/strong>, Honorary Chair of the organizing committee.<br data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2141\" \/><em data-start=\"2141\" data-end=\"2326\">\u201cThis is Prof. Amano\u2019s first visit to Wroc\u0142aw. We have known each other for thirty years and have co-authored publications. His participation undoubtedly draws significant attention.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2866\">With the global introduction of white LEDs for energy-efficient lighting, researchers are now increasingly interested in <strong data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2464\">UV emitters<\/strong>, which have numerous applications. A true breakthrough would be the use of <strong data-start=\"2540\" data-end=\"2588\">AlGaN-based materials for water purification<\/strong>, a technology that could improve life for millions of people in developing countries. Another material attracting attention is <strong data-start=\"2716\" data-end=\"2725\">Ga\u2082O\u2083<\/strong>, still relatively new to research but promising wide applicability\u2014as a high-power transistor, photodetector, gas sensor, or in solar cells.<\/p><p data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"3412\">A major scientific backbone for the conference is the research conducted at <strong data-start=\"2998\" data-end=\"3020\">\u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT<\/strong>, where <strong data-start=\"3028\" data-end=\"3051\">Prof. Detlef Hommel<\/strong> leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/port.lukasiewicz.gov.pl\/en\/rd-centers\/materials-science-engineering-center\/advanced-semiconductor-epitaxy-research-group\/\"><strong data-start=\"3062\" data-end=\"3111\">Advanced Semiconductor Epitaxy Research Group<\/strong><\/a>. His team develops new deep-UV emitters based on group-III nitrides (AlGaN) in unique material compositions that incorporate arsenic\u2014and in the future, possibly boron. Their aim is to create technologies applicable to water purification, medical disinfection, public health, and the defense industry.<\/p><p data-start=\"3414\" data-end=\"3666\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">According to Prof. Hommel, <strong data-start=\"3441\" data-end=\"3485\">international collaboration is essential<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"3486\" data-end=\"3489\" \/><em data-start=\"3489\" data-end=\"3666\" data-is-last-node=\"\">\u201cChallenges of this scale cannot be solved within one country. We need European and global cooperation.
