As part of the SAME-NeuroID project, researchers have developed unified research protocols (SOPs) that enable modeling of mental disorders at both the cellular and behavioral levels. This is a step toward objective diagnostic tests that could transform the treatment of depression, schizophrenia, or PTSD.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-598981b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"598981b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb72626 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bb72626\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"743\" data-end=\"1138\">Today, diagnosing mental disorders depends on a clinical interview\u2014subjective, shaped by a physician\u2019s experience and the patient\u2019s ability to describe symptoms. Treatment itself is often based on trial and error. This is likely one of the reasons why it is still easier for many to acknowledge thyroid or gastrointestinal disease than depression or anxiety disorders diagnosed by psychiatrists.<\/p><p data-start=\"1140\" data-end=\"1361\">Meanwhile, a recent European Commission report shows that <strong data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1299\">46% of Europeans experienced a mental-health problem (e.g., depression) within the past 12 months<\/strong> (2023 data). Only half of them sought help from a specialist.<\/p><p data-start=\"1363\" data-end=\"1610\">Tests that can objectively detect biological changes in individuals with depression would offer an opportunity not only for improved diagnostics and more precise treatment selection, but also for a societal shift in how mental health is perceived.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba52190 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ba52190\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Common Research Language for Mental Disorders<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72fda15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72fda15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"2059\">Scientists at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT have developed a set of unified research protocols\u2014SOPs\u2014that allow laboratories around the world to model mental disorders in a standardized way at the cellular and behavioral levels. Put simply: they created and validated instructions enabling laboratories to reproduce features of psychiatric conditions in exactly the same way. Why does this matter?<\/p><p data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2412\"><em data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2338\">\u201cWe cannot perform experiments on the living human brain, so scientists recreate its environment\u2014cells, their connections, and disease mechanisms\u2014in the lab. The problem is that everyone does it differently, and we cannot be certain that we are obtaining comparable results,\u201d<\/em> explains <strong data-start=\"2348\" data-end=\"2375\">Dr. hab. Witold Konopka<\/strong>, leader of the SAME-NeuroID project.<\/p><p data-start=\"2414\" data-end=\"2932\">Although SOPs may sound like academic paperwork, they are fundamentally practical tools:<br data-start=\"2502\" data-end=\"2505\" \/><em data-start=\"2505\" data-end=\"2908\">\u201cTo progress toward clinical trials and ultimately diagnostic tests for disorders such as depression, we must ensure that research conducted in different laboratories is reproducible, comparable, and scalable. Only then can we speak of global research on the mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders, on biomarkers that signal disease development, and on therapies tailored to individual patients,\u201d<\/em> Dr. Konopka emphasizes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9692a03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9692a03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">From Skin Cells to a \u2018Mini-Brain\u2019<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eeb900f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eeb900f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3463\">At \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, research begins with reprogramming adult skin or blood cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which can transform into any cell type in the body. These cells preserve the patient\u2019s genetic code\u2014including hereditary conditions, risk variants associated with mental disorders, and individual biological traits influencing brain function. This means that even though experiments are conducted in vitro, they reflect aspects of the patient\u2019s biology.<\/p><p data-start=\"3465\" data-end=\"4317\">From iPSCs, researchers generate neurons, astrocytes, and brain organoids.<br data-start=\"3539\" data-end=\"3542\" \/>\u2022 <strong data-start=\"3544\" data-end=\"3565\">Neuronal networks<\/strong> allow scientists to study disruptions in communication occurring in depression or schizophrenia.<br data-start=\"3662\" data-end=\"3665\" \/>\u2022 <strong data-start=\"3667\" data-end=\"3681\">Astrocytes<\/strong>, once considered merely support cells, are gaining prominence. Researchers at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT investigate genes such as <strong data-start=\"3805\" data-end=\"3814\">FKBP5<\/strong>, a regulator of stress resilience. Artificial intelligence detects depression-like symptoms in animals after only a few days of severe stress, eliminating subjective assessment and accelerating detection of behavioral changes indicative of disease or therapeutic response.<\/p><p data-start=\"4850\" data-end=\"5141\">Contributors to the development of this new diagnostic platform include <strong data-start=\"4922\" data-end=\"4949\">Dr. hab. It enables scientists to observe, quantify, and compare what was previously unmeasurable.<\/p><p data-start=\"5638\" data-end=\"6011\"><em data-start=\"5638\" data-end=\"5761\">\u201cThis is also a significant technological advancement that positions us at the forefront of modern psychiatric research,\u201d<\/em> says Dr. Konopka. <em data-start=\"5780\" data-end=\"6011\">\u201cIt led to additional grants, including a \u20ac15 million Horizon Europe Teaming for Excellence project. We also initiated collaboration with industry\u2014this platform is ready for use in preclinical, clinical, and industrial research.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"6013\" data-end=\"6501\">The goal is not to replace psychiatrists, but to equip clinicians and patients with tools that support diagnostics and effective treatment. In a world where global health organizations warn of the alarming decline in mental health\u2014especially among children\u2014where WHO ranks depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and where depression contributes to nearly <strong data-start=\"6386\" data-end=\"6417\">800,000 suicides every year<\/strong>, new solutions based on genetic, cellular, and behavioral data are urgently needed.<\/p><p data-start=\"6503\" data-end=\"6824\">This data-driven, transdiagnostic approach is also strongly supported by the European Union.
