The aim of the call is to fund research in the field of medical biotechnology. Out of five submitted projects, an international panel of experts rated two projects the highest. They will receive funding totaling nearly <strong data-start=\"371\" data-end=\"390\">PLN 119 million<\/strong> for research on oncology therapies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc0a012 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"dc0a012\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25e4ba7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25e4ba7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"758\">As part of the third WIB call, announced in <strong data-start=\"472\" data-end=\"480\">2023<\/strong>, researchers from an additional seven scientific centers from across Poland are joining the group of scientists whose work and research activities are funded by the <strong data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"669\">Polish Science Fund<\/strong>. The awarded funds will ensure stable financing of the projects for the next five years.<\/p><p data-start=\"760\" data-end=\"1230\">The first WIB call was announced in <strong data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"804\">2020<\/strong>. At that time, one winner was selected\u2014the project <em data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"941\">\u201cHorizon of Excellence in the Applications of Matrix RNA in Immuno-Oncology [HERO]\u201d<\/em>, whose authors received nearly <strong data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"991\">PLN 70 million<\/strong> to conduct research on new cancer therapies. Since <strong data-start=\"1043\" data-end=\"1051\">2022<\/strong>, the HERO project has been successfully implemented by four major scientific institutions in Warsaw (more information: <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/port.lukasiewicz.gov.pl\/wib\/pierwszy-konkurs-wib\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1228\">https:\/\/port.lukasiewicz.gov.pl\/wib\/pierwszy-konkurs-wib\/<\/a>).<\/p><p data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1627\">\u2013 <em data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1563\">The growing number of institutions and scientists funded under the WIB program proves that the importance of the Program is increasing, and that information about a new potential source of funding for innovative research ideas is reaching an ever-expanding group of scientists from many cities and diverse research institutions<\/em> \u2013 says <strong data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1587\">Pawe\u0142 Kurant<\/strong>, Deputy Director of \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT.<\/p><hr data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1632\" \/><h3 data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1703\">Introduction to the Development of Cellular Interceptive Medicine<\/h3><p data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"2118\">The first project distinguished in the current call is entitled: <em data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1909\">\u201cTargeted Single-Cell Analysis Technology for Cancer Diagnostics \u2013 an Introduction to the Development of Cellular Interceptive Medicine.\u201d<\/em> The project was submitted by and will be carried out by a research team from the <strong data-start=\"1991\" data-end=\"2072\">Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Pozna\u0144<\/strong>, led by <strong data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2117\">Prof. Dr. hab. Marek Figlerowicz<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2752\">The main goal of the project is to revolutionize cancer diagnostics through the development of a nucleic-acid-based, microfluidics-independent technology enabling single-cell analysis, which will then be used to create targeted diagnostic tests. The tests are intended for use in diagnosing <strong data-start=\"2411\" data-end=\"2443\">acute myeloid leukemia (AML)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2448\" data-end=\"2486\">chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)<\/strong>. The core idea of the project is to introduce highly advanced single-cell analysis technologies into clinical practice by reducing their technical complexity and cost while improving overall clinical usability. The project received a grant of <strong data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2751\">PLN 40,216,289.50<\/strong>.<\/p><hr data-start=\"2754\" data-end=\"2757\" \/><h3 data-start=\"2759\" data-end=\"2794\">Toward Modern Vascular Oncology<\/h3><p data-start=\"2796\" data-end=\"3429\">The second project, entitled <em data-start=\"2825\" data-end=\"2928\">\u201cPersonalized Vascular Endothelium Diagnostics in Oncology Therapy: Toward Modern Vascular Oncology,\u201d<\/em> was submitted by a consortium of research teams representing: <strong data-start=\"2991\" data-end=\"3018\">Jagiellonian University<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"3024\" data-end=\"3138\">Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroc\u0142aw<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"3144\" data-end=\"3243\">Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3245\" data-end=\"3277\">Medical University of Gda\u0144sk<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"3283\" data-end=\"3387\">Maria Sk\u0142odowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology \u2013 State Research Institute in Gliwice<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"3393\" data-end=\"3428\">Warsaw University of Technology<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"3431\" data-end=\"3999\">The research team is led by <strong data-start=\"3459\" data-end=\"3494\">Prof. Dr. hab. Stefan Ch\u0142opicki<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"3500\" data-end=\"3527\">Jagiellonian University<\/strong>. The goal of the team\u2019s scientific work is to develop a new electrochemical aptasensor technology using aptamers and original methodological solutions based on polymer nanobrushes, along with a dedicated <strong data-start=\"3732\" data-end=\"3740\">POCT<\/strong> device with microfluidic flow systems. This entirely new technology will serve as a tool supporting early diagnosis of cardiovascular complications accompanying oncology therapies. The total funding allocated to this project amounts to <strong data-start=\"3977\" data-end=\"3998\">PLN 78,578,024.95<\/strong>.<\/p><hr data-start=\"4001\" data-end=\"4004\" \/><h3 data-start=\"4006\" data-end=\"4034\">What Is the WIB Program?<\/h3><p data-start=\"4036\" data-end=\"4463\">The <strong data-start=\"4040\" data-end=\"4070\">Virtual Research Institute<\/strong> is an innovative program supporting research with high commercialization potential in one of the key areas for society\u2014<strong data-start=\"4190\" data-end=\"4215\">medical biotechnology<\/strong>. The Institute was established under the Act of <strong data-start=\"4264\" data-end=\"4278\">04\/04\/2019<\/strong> on supporting scientific activity from the <strong data-start=\"4322\" data-end=\"4345\">Polish Science Fund<\/strong>. For this purpose, the <strong data-start=\"4369\" data-end=\"4413\">Ministry of Science and Higher Education<\/strong> allocated a record amount of <strong data-start=\"4443\" data-end=\"4462\">PLN 450 million<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"4465\" data-end=\"4953\">The program is addressed to the most outstanding and talented Polish scientists conducting research at the highest global level\u2014representatives of universities as well as scientific and research institutes.
