Representatives of partner institutions, local governments, scientific and educational organizations from the Polish\u2013Saxon border region, as well as all those interested in the planned activities, met on 25 March<\/strong> at the Boles\u0142awiec Cultural Centre<\/strong> for the inauguration of the Cross-Border Experience Gardens<\/strong> project.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The project, co-financed by the Interreg Poland\u2013Saxony<\/strong> EU programme, aims to strengthen cross-regional cooperation in education and science, promote the STEM\/MINT<\/strong> teaching approach, and develop future-oriented competencies.<\/p>

The meeting in Boles\u0142awiec\u2014particularly the panel discussion\u2014showed that communities on both sides of the border face similar challenges: the outflow of young people from smaller towns, declining population density in border areas, and shortages of specialists, including teachers, in local communities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The panel on challenges in science popularization featured:<\/p>

  • Tomasz Gabrysiak<\/strong>, Starosta of Boles\u0142awiec County<\/p><\/li>

  • Pawe\u0142 Kurant<\/strong>, \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT<\/p><\/li>

  • Prof. Sophia Keil<\/strong>, Hochschule Zittau\/G\u00f6rlitz<\/p><\/li>

  • Dr Albert Langkamp<\/strong>, TUD Campus Lausitz<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    The discussion was moderated by Marek Staniewicz<\/strong>, Director of the Department of Social Responsibility of Science at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT.<\/p>

    Pawe\u0142 Kurant<\/strong>, Deputy Director of \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, emphasized that the Cross-Border Experience Gardens constitute a pilot initiative demonstrating that the goals of science popularization are shared on both sides of the border. The project is intended to initiate further activities that will increase young people\u2019s interest in science. The Department of Social Responsibility of Science at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, led by Marek Staniewicz<\/strong>, who is also the project manager, is already working on concepts for engaging workshops and training sessions for students and teachers.<\/p>

    During the discussion, Prof. Sophia Keil<\/strong> from Hochschule Zittau\/G\u00f6rlitz clearly defined the essence of science popularization:
    \u201cYoung people should be able to imagine that they could study science\u2014that it is possible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

    Mobile exhibitions, school workshops, and local science centers\u2014such as SOWA in Boles\u0142awiec<\/strong>, presented by El\u017cbieta Osta\u0144ska<\/strong>\u2014are meant to build an image of a scientist\u2019s work in young people\u2019s minds and spark interest in such career paths.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    The STEM\/MINT<\/strong> method promoted within the project is not an alternative to traditional school education but rather its complement. Similarly, research conducted in scientific institutes\u2014often practical and application-oriented\u2014complements academic education at universities. All participating universities emphasized that the technological solutions they develop are intended for everyday use, making continuous cooperation between academic and school environments and business partners essential.<\/p>

    Tomasz Gabrysiak<\/strong>, Starosta of Boles\u0142awiec County, stressed that it is the responsibility of local governments to ensure that educational offerings for young people reflect current trends and labor market needs, and to create development conditions in smaller towns so that graduates can lead fulfilling lives there after completing their studies.<\/p>

    German partners from eastern Saxony\u2014like residents of the Polish border region\u2014are well aware that, in addition to strong educational programmes, effective regional development strategies require young people who are aware of the opportunities offered by science.<\/p>
