In biological systems, <strong data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"598\">self-assembly<\/strong> benefits from evolutionary optimization of molecular interactions that fine-tune the <strong data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"723\">structure, morphology, and function<\/strong> of biomaterials. Nature uses the <strong data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"795\">primary sequence of macromolecules<\/strong> (such as proteins) to direct folding into specific motifs, which then <strong data-start=\"866\" data-end=\"919\">self-organize into complex, functional structures<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1301\">In contrast, <strong data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"959\">synthetic polymers<\/strong> still lack the advanced hierarchical organization and functionalities seen in living systems. Therefore, from a materials innovation standpoint, it is essential to <strong data-start=\"1124\" data-end=\"1184\">design well-defined interactions between building blocks<\/strong> that allow them to <strong data-start=\"1204\" data-end=\"1262\">assemble into predetermined hierarchical architectures<\/strong> and exhibit diverse functionalities.<\/p><p data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"2049\">In recent years, <strong data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1345\">peptide self-assembly<\/strong> has attracted significant attention. Although peptide-based materials with defined sequences have shown promise, their <strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1490\">large-scale synthesis<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1516\">rapid degradation<\/strong> remain major limitations. <strong data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1580\">Sequence-defined abiotic polymers<\/strong> offer a solution to these challenges, adopting similar design strategies to peptides while providing greater <strong data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1718\">stability and tunability<\/strong>. These polymers, defined by their <strong data-start=\"1753\" data-end=\"1782\">precise primary structure<\/strong>, open new possibilities for <strong data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"1850\">next-generation synthetic materials<\/strong> that mimic biological organization. However, <strong data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"1915\">little is known<\/strong> about the <strong data-start=\"1926\" data-end=\"1950\">single-chain folding<\/strong> of non-natural macromolecules or their <strong data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2046\">self-assembly into complex supramolecular structures<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2125\">This collaborative project combines the expertise of two research teams:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2566\"><li data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2333\"><p data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2333\"><strong data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2162\">Functional Macromolecules Team<\/strong>, led by <strong data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2195\">PhD Eng. R\u00f3\u017ca Szweda<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2229\">\u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 PORT, Poland<\/strong>, specializing in <strong data-start=\"2247\" data-end=\"2266\">polymer science<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2330\">self-assembly of sequence-defined polymer bioconjugates<\/strong>;<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2566\"><p data-start=\"2336\" data-end=\"2566\"><strong data-start=\"2336\" data-end=\"2368\">Group of Prof. Takuji Adachi<\/strong> at the <strong data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2434\">Faculty of Sciences, University of Geneva, Switzerland<\/strong>, specializing in <strong data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2476\">optical spectroscopy<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2531\">development of in-situ spectroscopic tools<\/strong> to study self-assembly dynamics.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2926\">Together, the teams aim to investigate the <strong data-start=\"2611\" data-end=\"2650\">fundamental self-assembly processes<\/strong> of <strong data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2692\">abiotic, sequence-defined polymers<\/strong>. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of <strong data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2797\">sequence-regulated hierarchical polymer self-assembly<\/strong>, which is essential for designing <strong data-start=\"2832\" data-end=\"2923\">synthetic materials with the structural sophistication and complexity of living systems<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2989\">The project encompasses <strong data-start=\"2952\" data-end=\"2986\">three main research objectives<\/strong>:<\/p><ol data-start=\"2990\" data-end=\"3259\"><li data-start=\"2990\" data-end=\"3123\"><p data-start=\"2993\" data-end=\"3123\"><strong data-start=\"2993\" data-end=\"3026\">Developing a synthesis method<\/strong> for <strong data-start=\"3031\" data-end=\"3083\">high-molar-mass, sequence-defined polycarbamates<\/strong> using a <strong data-start=\"3092\" data-end=\"3120\">mechanochemical approach<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3200\"><p data-start=\"3127\" data-end=\"3200\"><strong data-start=\"3127\" data-end=\"3168\">Studying their self-assembly behavior<\/strong> in solution and solid states.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3201\" data-end=\"3259\"><p data-start=\"3204\" data-end=\"3259\"><strong data-start=\"3204\" data-end=\"3256\">Characterizing the resulting material properties<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p data-start=\"3261\" data-end=\"3611\">The research aims to determine how <strong data-start=\"3296\" data-end=\"3336\">monomer sequence and stereochemistry<\/strong> influence <strong data-start=\"3347\" data-end=\"3391\">aggregation into hierarchical structures<\/strong>, and how these structural differences affect <strong data-start=\"3437\" data-end=\"3475\">rheological and thermal properties<\/strong>.
