data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"468\" \/><strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"548\">\u0141ukasiewicz Research Network \u2013 PORT Polish Center for Technology Development<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"890\">The goal of this project is to <strong data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"659\">exploit the unique properties of micropillar III-nitride structures<\/strong> to develop <strong data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"720\">ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs)<\/strong>. The success of this project will bring us closer to creating <strong data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"813\">efficient UV light sources<\/strong> capable of <strong data-start=\"825\" data-end=\"852\">replacing mercury lamps<\/strong>, which are still widely used today.<\/p><p data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"1405\">A major advantage of the <strong data-start=\"917\" data-end=\"941\">micropillar geometry<\/strong> in nitride-based LEDs lies in the <strong data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"1005\">enhanced light extraction<\/strong> enabled by the structural shape. In traditional planar LEDs, most of the emitted light becomes <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1133\">trapped inside the structure<\/strong> due to <strong data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1170\">total internal reflection<\/strong>, caused by the difference in refractive indices between the diode material and its surroundings. Without the use of <strong data-start=\"1287\" data-end=\"1327\">complex and costly optical solutions<\/strong>, only a small fraction of the generated radiation escapes from planar LEDs.<\/p><p data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1828\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">In contrast, <strong data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1450\">micropillar-based emitters<\/strong> guide light <strong data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1493\">along the structure\u2019s axis<\/strong>, similarly to <strong data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1526\">optical fibers<\/strong>, allowing a <strong data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1592\">significantly higher portion of emitted radiation<\/strong> to exit the device <strong data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1669\">without the need for additional extraction techniques<\/strong>.
