(CNS)<\/strong> is to receive stimuli from both external and internal environments, process them, and generate appropriate responses. It is responsible for <strong data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"673\">complex cognitive processes<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"719\">thinking, learning, and memory<\/strong>. The basic structural and functional unit of the CNS is the <strong data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"790\">neuron<\/strong>, consisting of a <strong data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"821\">cell body<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"825\" data-end=\"845\">single long axon<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"873\">multiple dendrites<\/strong>. Dendrites collect information from other cells, while axons transmit signals to other neurons. The transmission of information between cells occurs through <strong data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1043\">synapses<\/strong>, specialized junctions that modulate signal flow. Proper synaptic function and neuronal network organization are essential for efficient communication within the CNS. Disruptions in synapse formation and dendritic organization are characteristic of several severe <strong data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1338\">neuropsychiatric disorders<\/strong>, such as <strong data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1381\">schizophrenia, Rett syndrome,<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1396\">autism<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"2172\">The aim of this project is to <strong data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1511\">characterize the function of a novel protein, Amotl2, in neurons and the CNS<\/strong>. To date, <strong data-start=\"1522\" data-end=\"1532\">Amotl2<\/strong> has primarily been studied in the context of <strong data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1610\">cell polarization, adhesion,<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1615\" data-end=\"1632\">tumorigenesis<\/strong>. Its role in the brain remains unexplored, making this research <strong data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1718\">highly innovative<\/strong>. Amotl2 belongs to the <strong data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"1771\">Angiomotin protein family<\/strong>, which also includes <strong data-start=\"1793\" data-end=\"1801\">Amot<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1806\" data-end=\"1816\">Amotl1<\/strong>. These proteins share a similar domain organization and exhibit functional similarities. While little is known about the role of Angiomotins in the brain, previous studies have shown that <strong data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2056\">Amot regulates dendrite and synapse development<\/strong>, and preliminary findings from the research team indicate that <strong data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2169\">Amotl1 may be linked to psychiatric disorders<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2174\" data-end=\"2619\">Early results suggest that <strong data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2263\">Amotl2 also plays an important role in synaptic regulation<\/strong>. The project will therefore systematically investigate <strong data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2371\">Amotl2 interactions with other neuronal proteins<\/strong> using <strong data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2421\">biochemical assays on purified proteins<\/strong>. It will also analyze <strong data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2483\">morphological and molecular changes<\/strong> in neurons lacking the <strong data-start=\"2507\" data-end=\"2522\">Amotl2 gene<\/strong>, as well as assess <strong data-start=\"2542\" data-end=\"2567\">behavioral phenotypes<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"2571\" data-end=\"2616\">mice with neuron-specific Amotl2 deletion<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"3149\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Given that <strong data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2677\">neurological and brain function disorders<\/strong> represent one of the greatest challenges for modern healthcare, understanding the <strong data-start=\"2760\" data-end=\"2813\">behavioral, structural, and molecular alterations<\/strong> resulting from Amotl2 deficiency could contribute to the development of <strong data-start=\"2886\" data-end=\"2916\">new therapeutic strategies<\/strong> for <strong data-start=\"2921\" data-end=\"2946\">neurological diseases<\/strong>.
