Appetite-related brain disorders such as anorexia<\/strong>, bulimia<\/strong>, and binge eating disorder<\/strong> have become major mental health problems in modern societies, particularly affecting the younger population<\/strong>. These disorders arise from the dysregulation of neuronal circuits<\/strong> responsible for controlling physiological hunger. Conversely, the unprecedented availability of inexpensive, calorie-dense food<\/strong>\u2014rich in carbohydrates and fats\u2014has disrupted the brain\u2019s reward system<\/strong>, leading to obesity<\/strong>.<\/p>

Most obese patients eventually develop cardiovascular diseases<\/strong> and type 2 diabetes<\/strong>, collectively referred to as metabolic syndrome<\/strong>, which significantly increases the risk of cancer<\/strong> and reduces life expectancy<\/strong>.<\/p>

The hypothalamus<\/strong> plays a central role in maintaining the balance between hunger and satiety<\/strong>. Within it, Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons<\/strong> are critical for regulating feeding behavior<\/strong>, as they strongly stimulate hunger<\/strong> in animals. However, the mechanisms controlling AgRP neuronal activity<\/strong>, particularly at the protein regulation level<\/strong>, remain poorly understood.<\/p>

Recent findings from the research team have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs)<\/strong>\u2014small, non-coding regulatory RNAs\u2014within the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus<\/strong> can strongly modulate the activity of AgRP neurons<\/strong> by altering protein translation<\/strong>, ultimately leading to obesity in mice<\/strong>.<\/p>

The goal of this project is to investigate the molecular and functional properties of AgRP neurons<\/strong> in which regulatory microRNAs are selectively deleted<\/strong>.<\/p>

The expected results will:<\/p>

  1. Provide fundamental insights<\/strong> into the function of AgRP neurons<\/strong>, particularly regarding neuropeptide expression<\/strong> and key protein regulation<\/strong>, and<\/p><\/li>

  2. Lay the groundwork for the future development of targeted therapies<\/strong> for eating disorders<\/strong> controlled by the brain.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
