Wrocław BioTech Hub – integration of Wrocław’s scientific community

Seven Wrocław scientific institutions are consolidating their activities to work together on building strong research and development facilities and strengthening the city’s position as a significant scientific center. This is the first step on the road to a center of excellence in Wrocław.

Wrocław BioTech Hub is an initiative to integrate the scientific community, but it is also a step already taken towards joint applied research projects, establishing an interdisciplinary Ph.D. school, forming consortia to compete in the Virtual Research Institute competition and optimizing the use of research infrastructure.

Based on the “Teaming for Excellence” project implemented at Łukasiewicz – PORT, the initiative just launched is intended to prepare Wrocław to become part of a European Excellence Hub in the future, in which stakeholders will include scientific units, entrepreneurs, start-ups, cities and residents of the region.

In the project, we will work, among other things, on implementing in Wrocław personalized medicine and early detection of cancer. Therefore, symbolically, the agreement was signed on February 4, which is World Cancer Day.

The following representatives affixed their signatures on the agreement on joint activities:

  • Prof. Robert Olkiewicz, Rector of the University of Wrocław
  • Prof. Piotr Młynarz, Vice Rector for Organization and Infrastructure of Wrocław University of Science and Technology
  • Prof. Krzysztof Kubiak, Rector of Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences
  • Prof. Piotr Dzięgiel, Vice Rector for Science of the Medical University of Wrocław
  • Prof. Andrzej Gamian, Director of  the Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences
  • Prof. Dariusz Kaczorowski, Director of Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research, Polish Academy of Sciences
  • Prof. Jarosław Bosy, Director of Łukasiewicz – PORT

“This is an extremely important initiative not only for the involved Wrocław scientific centers and Wrocław as such, which, thanks to the consolidation of Wrocław institutions from the areas of medical sciences, exact sciences, life sciences, engineering and technology, will strengthen its position as a specialized research and development center. This is also an exceptionally important event in the scale and the whole country, which in the future is likely to gain the Wrocław Center of Excellence,” wrote Minister Maria Mrówczyńska in a letter handed over to the Vice President of the Łukasiewicz Research Network, Wiesław Skwarko.

“When creating the Center of Excellence at Łukasiewicz – PORT, we decided to expand its scale beyond the institute. We want it to have a Wrocław dimension. This will allow us to enter the world of large consortia and be a leader of really large research projects. We will be a real negotiating partner, we will make better use of the staff and equipment we already have, together we will develop faster”, says Prof. Jarosław Bosy, Director of the Wrocław institute, and adds that the scientific community has been waiting a long time for an initiative that will result in real action. “The Wrocław BioTech Hub is an opportunity that we can seize, but only together”.
