Another Implementation Doctorate at PORT

The second implementation doctorate at Łukasiewicz – PORT has been successfully defended. Congratulations to Dr. Karolina Moszak from the Materials Technology Laboratory at our Materials Science & Engineering Center!

The aim of Dr. Karolina Moszak’s research was to optimize the growth conditions of heterostructures containing layers of ternary AlGaN alloys with a high aluminum content. The dissertation was carried out at the Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław.

Heterostructures are complex structures composed of different materials (in this case, semiconductors), and their growth is achieved through the physical deposition of successive layers (gas-phase epitaxy using metal-organic compounds). Ensuring appropriate parameters for this process makes it possible to optimize individual components of LED devices, which in turn translates into higher efficiency and increased light emission.

The implementation of the doctoral research assumptions makes a significant contribution to understanding the mechanisms of structure growth and is essential for optimizing complete LED structures operating in the ultraviolet radiation range. The results presented in the dissertation have been published as scientific papers and may prove to be of great interest to industry.

The outcomes of the research may find applications in optoelectronic devices, particularly in light-emitting diodes operating in the ultraviolet range (UV-LEDs). The development of this technology is especially important due to the need to seek alternative materials to toxic mercury, the use of which is being progressively restricted. Thanks to their small size, low energy consumption, and the ability to be formed into virtually any shape, UV-LEDs can be used for air and water purification as well as surface disinfection (they exhibit bactericidal properties).

The demand for UV-LEDs continues to grow. According to regulations of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, mercury and its compounds should be gradually phased out of production processes. To this end, research into alternative substances that are less harmful to the environment and human health should be encouraged. This poses a major challenge for many companies in the technology sector that currently offer mercury lamps intended for surface and air disinfection in workplaces (including production facilities, warehouses, hospitals, microbiological laboratories, and air-conditioning systems). Moreover, in connection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, the idea of using UV lamps has also emerged for public spaces (offices, schools, public transport) as well as in homes.

An implementation doctorate is an alternative pathway to obtaining a doctoral degree, intended for individuals who wish to develop their scientific careers while continuing professional work outside academia.
