Wrocław BioTech Hub
The Wrocław BioTech Hub is an initiative that brings together Wrocław’s scientific community and consolidates efforts across medical, natural, exact, and engineering sciences. Its mission is to build a strong research and development base and strengthen the city’s position as a leading scientific center. It marks the first step toward creating a true Center of Excellence in Wrocław.
These initiatives also include efforts to support joint research project applications, the creation of an interdisciplinary doctoral school, and the formation of consortia that will compete in the Virtual Research Institute program, as well as the optimal use of research infrastructure.
Building on the European “Teaming for Excellence” project implemented at Łukasiewicz – PORT, an initiative has been launched to prepare Wrocław to become part of a future European Excellence Hub, bringing together research institutions, businesses, startups, local governments, and residents of the region.
As part of the project, we will work, among other things, on introducing personalized medicine and early cancer detection in Wrocław. Symbolically, the agreement establishing the Wrocław BioTech Hub was signed on February 4, 2025 – the World Cancer Day.
Who is Behind the Wrocław BioTech Hub?
Seven leading Wrocław academic and research institutions have joined forces:
- University of Wrocław
- Wrocław University of Science and Technology
- Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences
- Wrocław Medical University
- Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences
- Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research, Polish Academy of Sciences
- Łukasiewicz – PORT (initiator and coordinator)
Why Was the Hub Created?
Łukasiewicz – PORT has been awarded a prestigious EU grant of €15 million to establish a cutting-edge research center of excellence. The vision, however, extends beyond a single institution—we want this center to have a city-wide impact.
Why does it matter?
- It allows Wrocław to join large-scale international research consortia and lead ambitious projects (which no single institution could achieve alone).
- It positions us as a genuine partner in shaping the future European Excellence Hub—a transnational network of collaboration and innovation.
- It enables better use of people and infrastructure we already have, fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and experience exchange.
- It accelerates growth—greater opportunities mean greater potential for both individuals and organizations.
