Innovative Temperature Change Indicators

Indicato

The Advanced Materials Synthesis Research Group (AdMat) operating within Łukasiewicz – PORT has developed novel thermochromic active components for printing inks, which irreversibly change color after exceeding a defined threshold temperature. This technology enables the design of thermochromic indicators dedicated, among others, to monitoring the cold chain in the logistics of temperature-sensitive products.

Scope of operation and flexibility of applications

The chemical structure of the developed components can be adjusted so that the color change reaction occurs within a range from –50°C to +50°C, which allows for broad use in various temperature conditions.

Applications in modern printing techniques

The developed thermochromic substances can be used as additives to inks applied in printing processes.

  • screen printing,
  • flexographic printing.

They are particularly recommended for use on plastic filmsused, among others, in the production of packaging for frozen food products. Thanks to this, it is possible to apply thermochromic indicators directly onto packaging – without the need for additional labels.

Supporting cold chain safety

Printed indicators perform an informative function, signaling to end users whether the product has been stored under appropriate temperature conditions at every stage of transport and storage.

Possibility of printing on various substrates

Although the technology has been optimized for packaging films, it can also be used on other materials such as paper, cardboard, or glass, opening up additional market opportunities.
