Project Consortium
The SAME-NeuroID project is a joint initiative of Łukasiewicz – PORT (coordinating institution) and leading European neuroscience centres:
Paris Brain Institute (France)
Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry (Germany)
Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam (the Netherlands)
The scientific component of this initiative focuses on standardising protocols for modelling neurobiological parameters associated with neuropsychiatric disorders — one of the most pressing challenges of modern society. It is estimated that 27% of the adult population of the EU suffers from at least one mental disorder, often throughout their lives.
One of the reasons behind this alarming statistic is the limited understanding of the biological basis of psychiatric diseases. Recent advances in epidemiological and genetic research have opened the possibility to study the relationships between genes and the brain.
To fully capitalise on these discoveries, there is an urgent need for unified, well-defined models that can help elucidate disease mechanisms and identify targets for new therapeutic strategies. The standardisation of relevant models of neuropsychiatric disorders forms the core of the Twinning collaboration.
In addition, the partners will undertake several joint initiatives:
exchanging knowledge on technology transfer
supporting the development of early-career researchers
strengthening research excellence management
disseminating key findings in the field
raising public awareness of mental health
Currently, one of the major challenges faced by researchers is the use of disparate experimental methods across laboratories, which often makes it impossible to compare research results. The unification of procedures is therefore essential.
