Research Centers at Łukasiewicz – PORT

Scientific and research activity at Łukasiewicz – PORT is organized around four centers: the Population Diagnostics Center, the Materials Science & Engineering Center, the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Center, and the Laboratory Center. Each center brings together international research groups, specialized laboratories, and measurement facilities.

While each of the centers focuses on its own scientific domain, extensive collaboration enables us to conduct interdisciplinary projects and deliver services for industry.

All our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation, ensuring that research with strong application potential is conducted in line with the highest quality standards.

Population Diagnostics Center

The Population Diagnostics Center at Łukasiewicz – PORT is the first institution of its kind in Poland. Its mission is to develop innovative diagnostic methods for infectious and civilization-related diseases, thereby strengthening the biomedical security of society.

Research at the center focuses on pathogens that cause infectious diseases such as SARS-CoV-2, AH1N1, and SARS, enabling immediate action in the event of epidemic threats. Scientists also address major civilization-related diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.

Materials Science & Engineering Center

The Materials Science & Engineering Center drives research and measurement services in the synthesis, design, modification, and characterization of functional materials with potential applications. Designing and producing materials with well-defined and controllable properties requires the expertise of multidisciplinary research groups, whose competencies cover chemistry, physics, and engineering.

Key research directions include the study of composite materials and coatings (e.g., self-cleaning, anti-graffiti, and anti-icing), as well as the synthesis of luminescent, thermochromic, thermal, and mechanical systems.

Life Sciences and Biotechnology Center

The Life Sciences and Biotechnology Center addresses key civilization-related health challenges and builds expertise in neurobiology, oncology, and broadly defined biotechnology. Research focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms of civilization-related and rare diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancers, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Scientists at the center aim to improve human health by enhancing diagnostics and therapies, while emphasizing the importance of incorporating the perspectives of clinicians and patients into research projects. One of the center’s major goals is to establish a Center of Excellence for Applied Research, with a mission to commercialize discoveries related to disruptions of fundamental biological mechanisms in civilization-related and rare diseases.

Laboratory Center

Łukasiewicz – PORT offers world-class laboratories and highly qualified experts who conduct advanced research, experiments, and analyses for a broad range of industries. The center hosts laboratories in fields such as materials research, analytics and bioanalytics, cell biology, and laboratory diagnostics. It also includes the Clean Room Lab and Animal Lab facilities.

By bringing together laboratories within a single center, we combine perspectives across disciplines and develop technologies at the interface of multiple fields—tailored precisely to client needs.
