Seven Wrocław-based scientific institutions are consolidating their efforts to jointly build a strong research and development ecosystem and strengthen the city’s position as a major scientific center. This marks the first step toward establishing a Wrocław-based center of excellence.
The Wrocław BioTech Hub is an initiative integrating the local scientific community, but it also involves concrete actions already underway, including joint application-oriented research projects, the creation of an interdisciplinary doctoral school, the formation of consortia to participate in the Virtual Research Institute (WIB) competition, and the optimal use of shared research infrastructure.
Building on the “Teaming for Excellence” project implemented at Łukasiewicz – PORT, the newly launched initiative aims to prepare Wrocław to become part of a future European Excellence Hub, bringing together stakeholders such as research institutions, entrepreneurs, start-ups, the city, and regional communities.
As part of the project, efforts will focus, among other areas, on implementing personalized medicine in Wrocław and on the early detection of cancer. Symbolically, the agreement was signed on 4 February, which is World Cancer Day.
The agreement on joint activities was signed by:
Prof. Robert Olkiewicz, Rector of the University of Wrocław
Prof. Piotr Młynarz, Vice-Rector for Organization and Infrastructure, Wrocław University of Science and Technology
Prof. Krzysztof Kubiak, Rector of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences
Prof. Piotr Dzięgiel, Vice-Rector for Research, Wrocław Medical University
Prof. Andrzej Gamian, Director of the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences
Prof. Dariusz Kaczorowski, Director of the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research, Polish Academy of Sciences
Prof. Jarosław Bosy, Director of Łukasiewicz – PORT
“This is an extremely important initiative not only for the participating Wrocław scientific institutions and for the city itself, which—thanks to the consolidation of institutions from the fields of medical, exact, natural, and engineering sciences—will strengthen its position as a specialized research and development center. It is also an event of exceptional importance on a national scale, as Poland may gain a Wrocław-based Center of Excellence in the future,” wrote Minister Maria Mrówczyńska in a letter addressed to Wiesław Skwarka, Vice President of the Łukasiewicz Research Network.
“By creating a Center of Excellence at Łukasiewicz – PORT, we decided to extend its scope beyond the institute itself. We want it to have a city-wide dimension,” said Prof. Jarosław Bosy, Director of the Wrocław institute. “This will allow us to enter the world of large consortia and lead truly large research projects. We will become genuine partners for discussion, make better use of the potential of our people and infrastructure, and develop faster together.” He added that the scientific community had long been waiting for an initiative that would bring real, tangible action. “The Wrocław BioTech Hub is an opportunity we can seize—but only together.”
