Biobank and the Institute of Human Genetics PAS Join Forces for RCMC

Funding obtained from the Medical Research Agency under the Regional Digital Medicine Centers (RCMC) program has made it possible to establish a new platform for collaboration between the Biobank Research Group and the Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) in Poznań.

The Leader of the Biobank Research Group is Dr. Patrycja Gazińska, who conducts breast cancer research in the fields of digital, experimental, and molecular pathology. She worked for many years at renowned international institutions such as King’s College London, The Institute of Cancer Research, and AstraZeneca in the United Kingdom.

Prof. Ewa Strauss, Institute of Human Genetics PAS, conducts research on the genetic basis of cardiovascular diseases as well as neonatal genetics and pediatric oncology. She is a laureate of prestigious awards in the field of genetic determinants of abdominal aortic aneurysms and a recipient of national and European grants, including Horizon Europe (NetZeroAICT). The new collaboration within the RCMC initiative, specializing in Comprehensive Phenotyping of Civilization Diseases, will focus on a broad research program using artificial intelligence to analyze histopathological results and omics data derived from human genome and microbiome sequencing. The research will concentrate on cardiovascular diseases and morbid obesity.

The Biobank at Łukasiewicz – PORT holds one of the largest collections in Poland of biological material derived from both the general population and individuals affected by cardiovascular diseases. Prof. Strauss’s expertise will enable comprehensive use of these resources to conduct groundbreaking medical research, develop new therapies, and advance personalized medicine. New IT tools will also be developed to support clinicians in interpreting genomic sequencing results. Collaboration with the Institute of Human Genetics PAS will enrich the portfolio of the Łukasiewicz – PORT Biobank with expertise in human genetics and its application to the study of civilization diseases. Conversely, Łukasiewicz – PORT will support the Institute of Human Genetics PAS in establishing a new biobank, which will expand national collections with new biological resources.

We wish Dr. Patrycja Gazińska and Prof. Ewa Strauss a fruitful collaboration!
