Area Leader – Director of the Materials Science & Engineering Center (m/f)
WYMAGANIA OBOWIĄZKOWE:
The candidate should have:
- a habilitation degree, professorial title, or equivalent scientific, technological or implementation-related achievements; equivalent experience gained in a recognized R&D organization, research institute or high-tech industry may also be considered;
- documented achievements in materials science and engineering, semiconductors, functional materials, photonics, optoelectronics, nanotechnology, thin-film technologies or related fields;
- experience in leading research, technological or interdisciplinary R&D teams;
- proven ability to integrate teams with different competence profiles, including scientists, engineers, technologists, equipment specialists and external partners;
- experience in securing external funding, including large national or international grants, European projects, industrial contracts or consortium projects;
- experience in conducting projects in cooperation with universities, research institutes, scientific partners or industry;
- good knowledge of research and innovation funding mechanisms in Poland and Europe, including, where relevant, NCN, NCBR, FENG, Horizon Europe, EIC, ERC, MSCA, Digital Europe, Chips JU or comparable instruments;
- ability to combine high-quality basic research with applied research and commercially oriented R&D activities.
Assignment for the Next Stage of Recruitment
At the next stage of recruitment, candidates will be asked to present their own concept for the development of the Materials Science & Engineering Center, with particular emphasis on:
- development of competences in semiconductors and functional materials;
- integration of multidisciplinary teams;
- strategy for obtaining large national, European and international grants;
- use and further development of existing research infrastructure;
- cooperation with industry and high-tech partners;
- building a financially sustainable R&D unit;
- strengthening research group leaders and developing internal competences;
- measurable goals for the first 12, 24 and 36 months.
The concept should be consistent with the long-term development plans of Łukasiewicz – PORT and should demonstrate how the candidate intends to combine basic research, applied research, technological development and industrial cooperation.
Mile widziane
Additional assets will include:
- experience in compound semiconductors, especially III–V structures, nitrides, AlGaN/GaN, AlGaInN, DUV emitters, optoelectronics, photonics or photonic integrated circuits;
- familiarity with epitaxy, thin-film technologies, clean room processes, micro- and nanofabrication, and advanced materials characterization;
- experience in developing research and technological infrastructure;
- experience in technology transfer, intellectual property protection, commercialization or industry-driven R&D projects;
- international visibility demonstrated by publications, invited lectures, participation in conference committees, research networks or international projects;
- experience in mentoring research leaders, early-career scientists, PhD students and technology teams;
- ability to create a culture of cooperation between research groups rather than internal competition;
- experience in building a long-term project portfolio combining research grants, applied projects and R&D contracts;
- understanding of European semiconductor development directions, including initiatives related to Chips JU and semiconductor competence building in Europe.
OPIS STANOWISKA:
Łukasiewicz – PORT is seeking a Director of the Materials Science & Engineering Center to provide strategic, scientific, organizational and financial leadership for the Center. The role focuses on developing a coherent R&D programme in semiconductors, compound semiconductors, functional materials, photonics, optoelectronics, thin-film technologies, micro- and nanostructures, and advanced materials technologies.
The successful candidate will be expected to integrate existing scientific, technological and infrastructural competences, strengthen cooperation between research groups, and build a strong portfolio of competitive national, European, international and industrial projects. The development of semiconductors and functional materials should be aligned with the long-term development plans of Łukasiewicz – PORT and the strategic directions of the Łukasiewicz Research Network.
Codzienne zadania
The Director will be responsible for:
- Support the R&D Director in executing the strategic initiatives of the Łukasiewicz Center.
- developing and implementing the strategy of the Materials Science & Engineering Center in line with the long-term development plans of Łukasiewicz – PORT;
- shaping key research and technology directions in semiconductors, compound semiconductors, functional materials, photonics, optoelectronics, thin-film technologies and micro-/nanostructures;
- integrating multidisciplinary research, technological and engineering teams around common development goals;
- building a coherent project portfolio, including scientific, applied, industrial and infrastructure-oriented projects;
- initiating large national, European and international grant applications, including consortium-based projects;
- developing cooperation with academic institutions, research institutes, high-tech companies and industrial partners;
- supporting research group leaders, early-career researchers, PhD students and technology teams;
- ensuring effective use of the Center’s infrastructure, including laboratories, clean room facilities, thin-film technologies, micro- and nanofabrication tools, and materials characterization equipment;
- strengthening the financial sustainability of the Center through grants, R&D contracts, research services and industrial collaboration;

The candidate is expected to present a realistic and coherent vision for the development of the Materials Science & Engineering Center. This vision should show how the Center can become a recognizable R&D unit in semiconductors, functional materials and application-oriented materials technologies.
The concept should include:
- an assessment of the current competences of the Center;
- a proposal for integrating existing research groups, laboratories and infrastructure;
- a development plan for semiconductors, compound semiconductors, photonics, optoelectronics and functional materials;
- proposals for large grant and consortium projects to be pursued in the coming years;
- a strategy for securing external funding from national, European, international and industrial sources;
- a plan for more effective use of clean room facilities, thin-film, micro- and nanofabrication infrastructure, and materials characterization equipment;
- a model for cooperation with industry and technology partners;
- a plan for strengthening the national and international recognition of the Center;
- actions aligned with the long-term development plans of Łukasiewicz – PORT;
- an initial action plan for the first 12, 24 and 36 months.
