Łukasiewicz – PORT Polish Center for Technology Development and the University of Wrocław are launching a partnership in doctoral education. Through this collaboration, young researchers will be able to prepare their dissertations at the University of Wrocław while working and gaining experience in international Research Groups at our Institute.
Joint doctoral school of Łukasiewicz – PORT and the University of Wrocław
On July 20, 2021, Łukasiewicz – PORT signed an agreement with the University of Wrocław, allowing the Institute’s employees and scholarship holders to participate in the university’s doctoral school. This partnership enables them to combine academic studies with hands-on experience gained through participation in applied research conducted by international research teams.
Łukasiewicz – PORT is the first institute within the Łukasiewicz Research Network to establish such cooperation with a university.
Learning through practice – a new quality in doctoral education
Doctoral students of the University of Wrocław, who are also employees or scholarship holders of Łukasiewicz – PORT, will have the opportunity to acquire practical skills while working on unique and socially significant projects. They will benefit from state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and the expertise and mentorship of renowned scientists associated with the Wrocław institute.
Collaboration for the development of science and society
“The Łukasiewicz Network and Wrocław’s PORT are key partners in the commercialization of science in Poland,” said Prof. Przemysław Wiszewski, Rector of the University of Wrocław.
“We are confident that this cooperation with the University of Wrocław — which offers great potential not only in education but also in research — will continue to develop dynamically. Today’s agreement, which allows us to jointly create a doctoral school, will help us educate a new generation of scientists and show them the practical, socially beneficial dimension of science,” added the Rector.
Shared goals and personal motivations
“Firstly, as an institute focused primarily on applied research, Łukasiewicz – PORT and the University of Wrocław — the largest university in Lower Silesia — can complement each other’s competencies and support the development of experts who will contribute to the economy.
The second aspect of this cooperation is much broader — it is essential that we in Wrocław and across Lower Silesia build a community of research institutions that support one another and foster a cooperative scientific ecosystem.
And finally, on a personal note — the University of Wrocław is my alma mater,” said Dr. Andrzej Dybczyński, Director of Łukasiewicz – PORT.
Continuation of long-term cooperation
The doctoral school marks another stage in the long-standing collaboration between Łukasiewicz – PORT and the University of Wrocław — one of the top ten research universities in Poland.
Their cooperation to date has included organizing scientific conferences and running internship and scholarship programs for university students.
One of the participants in these programs, Kacper Prokop, a fifth-year Medical Chemistry student at the University of Wrocław and a Łukasiewicz – PORT scholarship holder, received the Student Nobel award in 2021 in the category of Natural Sciences and Energy.
The best of the best in the doctoral school
Under the new agreement, Research Group Leaders working within the Research Centers of Łukasiewicz – PORT will be able to nominate candidates for the University of Wrocław doctoral school.
Only the most outstanding individuals — those who meet both the project requirements of the Research Group Leader and the university’s recruitment criteria — will be admitted.
