In the latest episode of PORTfolio Stories: Science and Success, Dr. Przemysław Duda – neuroscientist, physician, and writer – discusses the remarkable plasticity of the human brain, its capacity for change, and the role of creativity in uncovering scientific principles.
The researcher from the Synaptogenesis Research Group at Łukasiewicz – PORT shares his scientific journey – from microbiology, through medicine, to studying brain function and memory. Speaking with Ila Joshi, he explains how combining medical and biological expertise helps him better understand the mechanisms underlying the nervous system.
The episode explores the concept of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and learn, and the role of proteins in memory consolidation. Dr. Duda also talks about his research project funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), in which he investigates mechanisms underlying bipolar disorder.
Beyond his scientific work, Dr. Duda reveals his second passion – writing. Creating science-fiction worlds helps him train spatial imagination and conceptual thinking, providing fresh perspectives in his research.
This inspiring conversation shows that combining different roles in life is both possible and valuable – a scientist can be an artist, and an artist can be a researcher.
