Histopathology Specialist
Łukasiewicz – PORT Polish Center for Technology Development is a Research Institute within the Łukasiewicz Research Network. It focuses on development of new technologies, resulting from basic and applied research, which, in turn, serve as a basis for innovative solutions for the industry. With high-class specialists and state-of-art infrastructure, we provide capacity for the most advanced research. Our Institute consists of three research centers – Life Sciences & Biotechnology Center, Materials Science & Engineering Center and Center for Population Diagnostics, with access to specialized core laboratories – a combination, which allows to carry out both, scientific research and pilot studies for the industry in a comprehensive manner.
Currently we are looking for Histopathology Specialist.
The Histopathology Specialist will be instrumental in developing the Digital Biobank within the Technological Platforms: Clinical and Biobanking (P1) and Spatial and Computational Pathology (P2). With their expertise and experience, they will actively contribute to the digitization of biological samples, their documentation, and the integration of modern technological solutions. Key responsibilities include receiving, preparing, and processing biological samples, digital scanning, and inputting data into the Biobank database system. The individual in this role will be employed at the P4Health Center of Excellence, funded by the Horizon Europe Teaming for Excellence project, with one of the key KPIs focused on expanding the biobank material collection (MS3). Through close collaboration with pathologists, biobanking experts, and specialists in experimental pathology, the Histopathology Specialist will actively contribute to achieving project goals by supporting the creation of high-quality biobank resources and the implementation of innovative solutions in digital biobanking and experimental pathology (WP 2). The Histopathology Specialist will report directly to the Research Project and Biobanking Leader (R&D Director).
Key Responsibilities:
Preparation of Biological Samples and Their Biobanking:
- Collection, trimming, and preparation of samples for histopathological analysis.
- Processing and embedding tissue samples in paraffin.
- Performing microtomy (cutting samples on a microtome) and preparing microscope slides.
- Biobanking of biological materials in compliance with the Biobank’s internal procedures.
Staining of Slides:
- Performing standard stains (e.g., hematoxylin and eosin) and specialized stains (e.g., immunohistochemical stains, PAS).
- Calibrating and optimizing staining protocols.
Operation and Maintenance of Laboratory Equipment:
- Operating microscopes, microtomes, automatic staining stations, and other laboratory equipment.
- Conducting regular inspections and maintaining equipment in accordance with established procedures.
Data Documentation:
- Ensuring accurate documentation of sample preparation and analysis processes.
- Digitizing histopathological slides and uploading them into the Biobank Research Group database system.
- Collaborating closely with pathologists.
- Preparing detailed reports.
Quality Assurance:
- Adhering to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Ensuring that all activities comply with relevant regulations and ethical standards.
Team Collaboration:
- Providing support in the implementation of experimental pathology projects within the Łukasiewicz-PORT Biobank Research Group.
- Collaborating with team members to develop the Digital Biobank.
Requirements:
- Higher education in a relevant field (e.g., medical analytics, biotechnology or similar).
- Experience working in a histopathology laboratory.
- Proficiency in operating microtomes, staining equipment, and other histopathological instruments.
- Strong knowledge of histopathological procedures and aseptic techniques.
- High level of accuracy, reliability, and manual dexterity.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and independently manage tasks.
- Command of English at least at a communicative level.
- Knowledge of immunohistochemical techniques and digital image analysis is an advantage.
