PORT Seminar Series: Lecture by Dr Anne Bertolotti

Łukasiewicz – PORT Polish Center for Technology Development invites you to a lecture by Dr Anne Bertolotti from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC LMB) in Cambridge.

The lecture will take place on 7 October 2022, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Participation is possible either on site at Łukasiewicz – PORT (147 Stabłowicka Street, Wrocław) or online via live streaming on the MS Teams platform. The event is part of the SAME-NeuroID project funded under the Horizon Europe programme.

Dr Anne Bertolotti has made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge on protein quality control mechanisms in cells, which represent cellular defense systems against potentially harmful proteins. She was one of the pioneers in the discovery of the mammalian adaptive stress response pathway and has recently uncovered processes through which cells maintain proteasome homeostasis.

She also identified mechanisms underlying the accumulation of misfolded proteins in neurodegenerative diseases and contributed to a paradigm shift in the field by discovering that aggregates of mutant SOD1 protein propagate indefinitely in a prion-like manner.

Based on her research into protein quality control systems, Dr Bertolotti has identified methods to enhance their function and is currently developing these approaches toward the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. One of the strategies she employs involves the selective inhibition of phosphatases, representing a major breakthrough, as phosphatases were previously considered “undruggable.”

At Łukasiewicz – PORT, Dr Bertolotti will deliver a lecture entitled:
“Boosting Protein Quality Control: A Strategy to Fight Neurodegenerative Diseases.”

The lecture will be conducted in English.
