What's new at Łukasiewicz – PORT?

The Friday meeting of the Institute Council, convening for the first time in its new composition, resulted in decisions on matters of key importance for Łukasiewicz – PORT. The Council issued a positive opinion on the candidacy of Prof. Jarosław Bosy for the position of Institute Director, approved the directions of the Institute’s scientific activities, and positively assessed the draft work plans (including the financial plan) for the coming year. The meeting was chaired by the Chairperson elected at the beginning of the session – the Council members entrusted this role to Prof. Adam Maciejczyk.

The AutoHealth consortium, involving Dr Raluca Contu from the Astrocyte Biology Research Group at Łukasiewicz – PORT, will investigate how stress experienced early in life affects the brain and body in adulthood. Meanwhile, Dr Ali Jawaid, as part of the EMPATHY consortium, will analyze brain–body interactions underlying eating disorders. Both projects have received funding from ERA-NET NEURON – a network of 35 organizations and ministries from 28 countries supporting research on the brain and its disorders.

We support innovation and education. Together with KOGENERACJA S.A., we are launching a new educational project entitled “Thermal Energy as the Key to a Sustainable Future”, under which we will organize workshops for children and young people. Our goal is to build environmental awareness in the next generation and, from an early age, highlight the importance of renewable energy sources in sustainable development and climate protection.

On 3 December, we launched the fourth call of the Virtual Research Institute (WIB) for innovative research projects with high commercialisation potential. This means PLN 142 million available to the best scientists working in medical biotechnology.

The winning team, led by Maurits Unkel from Erasmus University Medical Center, was recognized for the Neurava project, praised for its creativity and potential.

On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Dr. hab. Patrycja Gazińska, leader of the Biobank Research Group at the Population Diagnostics Center, Łukasiewicz – PORT, explains how modern molecular pathology technologies and biobanking can revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer—the most common malignant tumor in women. Her research, carried out in collaboration with international centers, highlights the enormous potential of these innovative technologies to improve diagnostics, predict therapy outcomes, and personalize patient treatment.

She defended her PhD dissertation in 2023 at the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław. Her research focused on investigating the role of tumor-associated macrophages in breast cancer in the context of the impact of vitamin D on the tumor microenvironment. She is currently continuing her research interests related to vitamin D and the role of immune system cells in the development of cancer, working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Innate Immunity Research Group.
