Łukasiewicz Research Network – PORT Polish Center for Technology Development is a Research Institute within the Łukasiewicz Research Network. It focuses on development of new technologies, resulting from basic and applied research, which, in turn, serves as a basis for innovative solutions for the industry. With high-class specialists and state-of-the-art infrastructure, we provide capacity for the most advanced research. Senior Specialist – Research Engineer (POSTDOC)

to join the recently formed Epigenetic Interactions Research Group in Łukasiewicz–PORT. This position is an exciting opportunity to become a part of and help build a young and dedicated research group that studies the gut microbiome and designs novel and innovative microbial-based therapies.

The gut microbiome is a complex microbial community that deeply affects the health and disease states of its host. Increasingly more evidence is being uncovered of the impact this microbial community has on both acute and chronic disorders, as well as its overwhelming influence in community well-being. From antimicrobial resistance to chronic intestinal inflammation, the gut microbiome is a perfect canvas from where to uncover novel insights that can be leveraged into innovative therapeutic approaches.

In our lab, we try to dissect the protective functions of the microbiota, identifying and manipulating their mechanisms, to turn that knowledge into groundbreaking biotherapeutic approaches that can significantly increase the well-being of patients. Using molecular biology and genetics techniques, as well as synthetic biology strategies, we study the functional aspects of microbiota members and pathogens, going from the bench to the animal, to understand the real scope of these functional manipulations.

In your role, you will implement advanced microbiology and multi-omics tools and use them to explore the mechanisms driving protective microbial functions.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Development, implementation and maintenance of microbial collections;
  • Designing and undertaking experiments as well as analyzing and interpreting data;
  • Reporting to the research group;
  • Drafting research articles and presenting at conferences;
  • Maintaining high-quality lab notes and data reports;
  • Communication and interaction within the team;
  • Contributing with ideas to address the questions of the project.

Requirments:

Academic qualifications: 

  • A PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline.

Technical skills and expertise:

Essential:

  • Hands-on experience in microbiology techniques (bacterial cell culture, conjugation, transformation);
  • Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques (PCR, RT-PCR, bacterial genetic manipulation and cloning); 
  • Ability to work independently and also capability of interacting within a group;
  • Commitment, creativity, curiosity, and motivation;
  • Very good work organizational skills;
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

Desirable: 

  • Experience in omics approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and/or metabolomics);
  • International training or work experience;
  • Previous experience in studying microbial interactions;
  • Previous experience in bioinformatics software;
  • Training and experience with animal experimentation (rodents).
